SOFER Initiative (Stand Out For Environment Restoration Initiative) is a duly registered, environment-focused non-governmental organization (NGO) headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria (CAC/IT/48706). Established in 2010, the organization is committed to promoting environmental protection, restoration, and sustainability through awareness, advocacy, and community-driven action.

SOFER Initiative works primarily with youths and local communities, leveraging creative programs to inspire positive attitudinal and behavioral change toward the environment. With a network of over 600 volunteers operating across several Nigerian states, SOFER has implemented impactful projects in tree planting, waste recycling, climate change mitigation, marine litter reduction, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), wildlife conservation, and environmental education.

Guided by its mission to promote responsible waste management and biodiversity conservation, and its vision to raise an environmentally conscious generation, SOFER Initiative upholds core values of accountability, collaboration, innovation, excellence, equality, and volunteering. The organization actively collaborates with stakeholders, governments, and partners to deliver sustainable environmental solutions aligned with global best practices.

Affiliations: SOFER Initiative is a member of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), the foremost global network addressing ghost gears worldwide.

SOFER Initiative is also a member of the National Task Force, GloLitter Nigeria. The national task force is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating a national action for the management of marine plastics in Nigeria.

The Fishing Net Gains project addresses ghost gear—which represents the largest source of marine plastic litter and causes ghost fishing through the uncontrolled entrapment of marine life. The project captures three priority areas. It focuses on the recovery of ghost gear, with 3,576.7 kg successfully retrieved. Second, it promotes responsible disposal through the establishment of six collection and disposal points known as “Fishing HubNets,” which also record data on lost fishing gear incidents reported by fishermen. Third, the project emphasizes upcycling and recycling by establishing a Community Integrated Center (CIC), a production facility that has trained 305 women and girls in ghost gear upcycling. These trainees produce shoes, bags, and the innovative Fishing Gear Fabric. The project has been implemented in 12 coastal communities in Nigeria and one in Cameroon and has been recognized by the United Nations as one of nine leading global solutions to marine plastic pollution.
